The Maroon team (tentatively named Battlestar Galactica*) defeated the Green team (Soul Train) 5-2 on Sunday night at the MSA. The Maroon team outshot the Green Machine 46-27 and BSG goalie Tina Kirkaldy had a stellar performance, ending the night with a .926 save percentage.
The Maroons got on the board first when "Birthday Boy" Jeremy Thompson scored short-handed at 10:59 in the first period with a pretty jook and back-hand shot that beat Arthur "Sig" Sigmund, stand-in goalie for the Green team . BSG defenseman Jim Waddell followed up 8 minutes later when he shot through traffic and found twine, unassisted, at 2:17. With sixty-one ticks left in the first, Maroon captain Joe Blom punched a shot in from the side of the net to put his team up 3-0 after one period. Blom was assisted by Thompson.
The Maroon scored again at the 4 minute mark in the second when young gun Taylor Hoelscher punched in a rebound fired from the point. Blueliner Dalton Ford was credited with the assist. The Green team scored just seconds later when a weird dribbler managed to sneak its way under netminder Kirkaldy's left pad. The second period ended 4-1 in favor of the Maroons.
The Maroon team continued to apply pressure and rain shots down on the Green netminder Sigmund. The Green team managed to score again at 12:12 when a wrister from the point deflected off Ford's leg and went long-side. Not to be discouraged, BSG continued a barrage of shots and at 10:03, Blom scored again with a patient shot, high to the glove side that beat a sprawling Sigmund to end the scoring 5-2. Blom was assisted by winger Steve Schmitz.
The Maroons take on Yellow (Starsky & Hutch) at 3:30PM on Sunday, January 22nd at the MSA.
